Is it the best looking app out there? No, it's not. I've jumped back and forth between many different weather apps over the years, and I always seem to return to AccuWeather for one reason or another. They’re great if you’re looking for widgets that are clean and simple. There aren’t too many customization options for the widgets however, you can select the background and text colors, customize the transparency level, and select a specific location (if you’re following more than one in the app). Three of the widgets display the current weather and temperature, while one displays two days and the other displays the full week with additional details about the humidity and wind. Weather by WeatherBug has five widgets: 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 3x1, and 4x2. The app includes ads and has both monthly and yearly subscription options to remove the ads. One really cool feature of Weather by WeatherBug is the Spark Lightning Alerts, which will let you know if there's any lightning in the area. You can get hourly and 10-day forecasts as well as 20 different weather maps. Weather by WeatherBug gives you free access to all kinds of useful information to keep you informed about the current weather and any weather-related events. Hands down 1Weather has some of the best weather widgets currently. You can also choose a specific location to show the weather for if you're following more than one. There are numerous layout styles, light and dark background color options, custom accent colors, and the ability to change the opacity level. The widgets aren't resizable, but they have some customization options to make them unique. Of course, the majority displays your current weather temp and conditions, though if you delve into the rest, you'll see that the current time, extended weather reports, not to mention the date, are all present in one form or another. When it comes to 1Weather's widgets, there are 12 in total, and they range from 1x1, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 3x4, 4x1, 4x2, and 4x3. While I've had some issues with inaccurate reporting, this is not an issue across the board, so like all weather apps, you have to decide which offers the most accurate info for your area. Like all of Google's updates, it may take some time before your device receives it.1Weather is a release that I've spent a lot of time with over the years and was my primary weather app for a time. News & Weather 2.0 is out on Google Play now. The widgets also have a semi-transparent border around them, which may be another element in Google's new design language. The app maintains the options for news + weather, news only, and weather only, with the weather only widget being changed to display the forcast for the coming days rather than just the current weather. The widgets for the app also receive a makeover. Old News & Weather widgets on the left, new on the right. Information about temperature and precipitation trends can be revealed by tapping the downward arrow on the weather card. Specific news topics can be accessed by the navigation pane that slides in from the left. The tabs at the top have also been removed, and all weather and news information is displayed in a single vertically scrolling list. The new design does away with the black color scheme and features information displayed on white cards with high resolution weather images. The weather images had also not been updated to support very high resolution devices in the 400+ ppi range, and looked quite blurry. I had not even used the old app to change the temperature units from Fahrenheit to Centigrade because the design was so outdated that I looked to other apps to get weather and news information. The new design is like a breath of fresh air. Old News & Weather on the left, new on the right. There was heavy use of black, with horizontal scrolling sections and gradients throughout. The app previously sported a design that was like a relic from the distant past, with an interface that seemed like a mixture between Android Gingerbread design and some parts of Google's original Holo design from Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The big change with the update is a complete design overhaul that implements Google's Material Design principles. It's the News & Weather application that comes on Android phones running software maintained by Google like Nexus and Google Play Edition devices. ![]() Today Google has rolled out an unexpected update to an app that seemed long forgotten.
